An easy family walk around the Carlops area with plenty of opportunity for exploring, tree climbing and paddling.

Park in the car park opposite the Carlops Village centre and under the rock. Lyne Braw Walk

Walk A3 - West Linton-Broomlee Circular 'Braw Walk'

Time - 60 minutes; Distance - 4 km/2.5 miles

A lovely stroll from the village along the stretch of the Lyne Water behind Broomlee camp. This walk is a well-kept secret described by ‘John’ on the village website in 2006. The route is a right of way but not an 'official' footpath, so it could be lost if not used.

Leave the village heading south via Station Road (B7059). After 1 km, and just before you reach the entrance to Broomlee Camp, you come to a house on the right...

Time - 60 minutes; Distance - 4.5 km/3 miles

A straightforward walk from the A701 near Newlands Village Hall at Halmyre to West Linton via Broomlee Hill.

Start - A701 near Halmyre, grid reference 175.494 Finish - West Linton

The start of the walk is on the north side of the A701, 400m north-east of the B7059 turning to West Linton. It is clearly signposted 'West Linton via Broomlee Hill' and waymarked throughout, as this forms part of the Tweed Trails network...

A walk in the valley of the Lyne linking two (probably) iron age hill forts, with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Start/finish – Newlands Kirk, on B7059 near Romanno Bridge

Park in the car parking area opposite Newlands Kirk, on the B7059 road to Peebles 1.5 km south of the A701 at Romanno Bridge. Turn right from the car park and walk along the road then over the bridge, tuning right on the other side of the bridge through a gate into a field, following the signpost (to 'Mountain Cross via Bordlands Fort')...

This short, easy walk encompasses much that attracts the visitor to the area. Along the route it will be seen how the conservation centre of the village gives way to more spacious modern developments and further on to the unspoilt hills and moorland. Areas of woodland soften the landscape and among the many beautiful trees to be seen, many of them planted in the last century, the lime avenues along Medwyn Road and down the Loan are particularly fine...

Highland CowWalk A10 - Kitleyknowe And Rutherford Circular Walk

Time – 1 hour – 90 minutes; Distance – 5 km/3 miles

A short circular walk from Carlops to Kitleyknowe and then along a little known (and dangerously little used) footpath across to Rutherford Castle, crossing the A702 and back to Carlops on the Old Roman Road.

Harbour CraigWalk A11 - Harbour Craig

Time – 1 hour; Distance – 4 km/2.5 miles

A fine walk from Carlops up to Harbour Craig, the dramatic rock up beyond Kitleyknowe where local covenanters are said to have taken refuge.  Mostly easy going, but the section at Harbour Craig where the route descends to the bottom of the gorge is very steep – turn back and retrace steps if unsure about this.  Can be combined with walk A2 or A10 to make a longer route

Penicuik HouseWalk A12 - Penicuik House Circular

Time – 60 minutes; Distance – 4 km/2.5 miles

A little outside our patch, but most of us drive past the start and finish of this walk so often, an hour’s detour is more than worth it to explore this secret world. If you’ve ever wondered what that car park is for just outside of Penicuik on the A766?  Now is your chance to find out. Note – good paths but they can be very muddy.

Start/finish – Car park on A766 I km west of Penicuik near Halmyre, grid reference 219.599

Leave the car park through the gate and along the tarmac track.  This is the Tympany entrance to the Penicuik House estate.  The track descends and then turns right and over the Knight’s Law bridge and then along the driveway up to Penicuik House...

Jenny Barry's CaveWalk A13 - Jenny Barry's Cave

Time – 45 minutes; Distance – 2 km/2 miles

A walk through a hidden valley along to a cave named after Jenny Barry, one of the two witches, or carlines, after who Carlops is reputed to be named. The witches would jump between the two outcrops of rock in the village - 'Carline's Loup' or Carlops, According to local legend, lead was mined in Jenny Barry's cave in Mary, Queen of Scots time, the ore being exported to Holland where silver was extracted. NOTE: if you encounter cows in any of the fields, come back another time – they’re not particularly welcoming.

Start/finish – Carlops Village car park

Leave the car park, bear left and cross the A702 and take the farm track up towards Carlopshill Farm (signposted 'Buteland by the Borestane'...
