The residents of and visitors to the West Linton area are very lucky to be surrounded by so much stunning scenery, all within a few miles of Edinburgh. Near to the village are walks that pass through woodlands, along river banks, across wild moorland, up 500 metre hills and along the Roman and ancient drove roads that criss-cross the area.
On this page, we are gathering together some suggestions for walks in the area. We hope to add to these suggestions, so if you have a favourite walk, please let us know about it, and we’ll add a route to the collection.
The walks all start and/or finish in West Linton or in the surrounding area covered by the OS Explorer maps 344 (Pentland Hills) and 336 (Biggar & Broughton). We have done these walks ourselves recently, so the directions should be accurate and up to date. We’ll plan to update them regularly. The routes mainly follow established rights of way. Where this is not the case, we have followed a route that should allow you to exercise your access rights without any problem, but we’d recommend having a read of the outdoor access code in any case:

Tweed Trails have published a useful leaflet showing the routes and some background detail to several of the walks on this site, which can be downloaded here.
The walks have been grouped together as follows:
Easy Walks – these walks all follow good paths, with no particularly challenging sections, and can be done by anyone of reasonable fitness in no more than an hour or so – more of a stroll than a walk.
Moderate Walks – a little more challenging, these – apart from being much longer, up to three hours in some cases, these walks may also include sections of more difficult terrain, so go kitted out appropriately.
Difficult Walks – much more challenging half day or day outings requiring walking experience and good fitness, map, compass etc.
A pdf version of each walk is available for download to take with you. Happy walking!
