Pentland Concerts - we'd like your views

The Music Society committee are in the process of arranging the concerts for our 2010/11 season.  To help us do this, we'd appreciate your views on issues such as:

- where we should hold our concerts

- what night of the week you'd prefer

- what sort of music you'd like to hear.

So, if you'd like more jazz, don't like a particular venue and are too busy on a Saturday to attend, this is your chance to have an influence.

We'll be posting a questionnaire on the website shortly, and would be really grateful if you could complete this and return it to me, Michael Pryor, at mipryor@btopenworld.com or, if you prefer paper, print it off and hand in to Linton Books or the collection box in the Carlops bus shelter.  Alternatively, just e-mail me with your thoughts.  Thank you.

Last Concert of the season coming up on Saturday!

Our final concert for 2009/10 will take place on Saturday night in Carlops Hall (7.30pm start).  This will feature the superb guitarist Simon Thacker, who will be accompanying the hugely talented singer, Daisy Chute.  The pair will be performing songs with a jazzy Latin tinge.

The concert will be 'cabaret' style - the room will be set out informally with tables, nibbles and a soft drink bar.  If you'd prefer something a little stronger, feel free to bring your own bottle - we'll provide the glasses.

Tickets are £9 on the door, free to members and under 16s.

First concert soming soon - 17 October 2009

Our first concert of the new season will take place on Saturday 17 October at 7.30pm in St Mungo's Church, West Linton, and will feature the wonderful Fujita Piano Trio.

The Fujita sisters from Japan have been playing chamber music together since early childhood. They made a highly acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall in March 1999. Concert engagements have taken the Trio to more than 100 venues in the UK. Overseas, they have played in Canada, France, Italy, Ireland, Romania, Egypt, Morocco and Turkey, and they have won numerous awards and prizes, both as a Trio and individually.  We are very fortunate to have a group with such a reputation coming to play for us in West Linton.

This year's programme now launched!

Following a very successful coffee morning on Saturday, the new Pentland Concerts programme has been published and subscriptions are now available.  We have a fantastic line-up this year (see details on our main page), with six concerts for only £40.  Please visit our main page for all the details you need.  We very much hope to see you at our concerts.  Best Wishes, the Music Society.

Concert alumni in Fringe Festival

Two of our past performers are to play a concert together in the Festival Fringe next month.

The Barbirolli String Quartet are to team up with the guitarist Sean Shibe to perform works by Mozart, Sor and Boccherini in a teatime concert  - 4pm on Thursday 13 August at the Royal Overseas League on Princes Street.

The previous day, Sean will be playing Bach solo at the same venue as part of the 'Bach for Breakfast' series.  This concert is at 9.30 and apparently you get tea/coffee and pastries afterwards!

Sean Shibe - Reviews don't come more 'rave' than this

One of the highlights of last season, or indeed, any other season, was the wonderful guitar recital we were given by Sean Shibe.  Everyone at that concert went away having seen something very special.  Well, we weren't the only ones.  In Monday's Herald, a review by Michael Tumelty of a concert at the Plug Festival in Glasgow was printed.  Among other items, the review said:

"Then came utter magic in Mark Pasieczny's guitar Sequenza, which took the guitar into little-explored, often exotic and always beguiling territory, and played by, I believe, the finest acoustic guitarist I have ever heard, Sean Shibe, a first year student who, incredibly, is still 16.  Remember the name.  One day, he will be famous.  I do not exaggerate."

You heard it in West Linton first!

Thanks to Alan Tweedie for bringing the review to our attention.

Committee members needed!

The Music Society has a small group of dedicated people to thank for being able to put on our programme each year, but we are always looking for new committee members to help us, sharing the load of the work that goes into the season and bringing new and fresh ideas.  If you would like to join our team, please get in touch - it would be great to see you!

School Workshop

Each year, the Society works with West Linton Primary School to stage a musical workshop for the children.  This year, one of the members of the Dalmeny Trio, the clarinetist Joanna Nicholson, and her sidekick Simon, who plays the bassoon, and who perform together as 'Sonsie Music', presented their programme of Scottish music and storytelling to all of children in the school.  The workshop took place on 28 April and went down a storm, with three different groups of pupils taking part in the interactive sessions.

Hilary Elliott, the School's Head Teacher, said:

"My thanks to members of West Linton Music Society with regard to the recent visit from Sonsie Music.  The children all enjoyed the Scottish themed musical performances/workshops.  The younger children were entertained and actively involved in the workshop entitled 'A Moose in the Hoose' with our older pupils enthusiastically participating in 'Blethertoon Braes'.  We are extremely fortunate to have been afforded this opportunity from the Society and greatly appreciate the support offered on this occasion, as on so many other occasions in the past."
