The Fidelio Trio (Darragh Morgan, violin, Robin Michael, cello and Mary Dullea, piano) perform extremely diverse repertoire internationally. The trio have released numerous CDs, including several premiere recordings of Scottish trios. They are passionate believers in the enormous range of possibilities the piano trio holds and are responsible for significantly extending the repertoire for trios in recent years by seeking out and commissioning new works. Recent highlights include a tour of China and appearances in Paris, Vienna, Dublin and London. They are fitting in their visit to West Linton among dates in the USA and South Africa, the release of three new CDs and a starring role in a TV documentary to be shown on Sky Arts. The trio will perform works by Schumann, Ravel, Percy Grainger and Nigel Osborne.
Tickets on the door are £9, under 16 free.
West Linton Music Society gets the New Year off with to flying start on Saturday 15th January. We invite you to leave the snow and cold outside and come and join us at Whitmuir the Organic Place for a talk by Derek Watson on Liszt and his visit to Scotland. Add to the mix a hot wood burning stove and a warming organic supper and the scene is set for a thoroughly sociable evening.
Derek is one of West Linton’s best-known personalities. As well as bookshop proprietor, Derek is also a talented pianist, author, composer, actor and public speaker. He is an acknowledged expert on Liszt, and brings immediacy, humour and colour to his talks. The evening will focus on ‘Liszt and Scotland', as 2011 is Liszt's bi-centenary. It is little known that Liszt and his rather colourful entourage visited and toured Scotland in 1840, establishing several links with Scottish composers and musicians.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 15th January 6.45pm for supper, or 8pm if you are coming simply for the talk. Tickets for the talk are £9, members and children free.
If you would like to come for the supper, tickets need to be booked in advance - £12 for a two course meal with vegetarian course available - by Monday 10th January from Michael Pryor at 01968 660829 or carolearchibald@yahoo.co.uk
The weather looks like it is going to relent, temporarily at least, over the weekend so we are confident that the planned jazz concert will go ahead on Saturday. However, parking at Carlops may be tricky, so please give us a call if you would like a lift - 661192 or 660829.
The survey we conducted told us you want to hear more jazz – well, here it is, and who better than Rob Hall and Chick Lyall (saxophone and piano) to answer the call. The duo is building a terrific reputation on the Scottish and UK jazz scene. Chick has been hailed as the ‘most adventurous Scottish (jazz) pianist of the current generation’ by the Penguin Guide to Jazz. Rob has been given great reviews in the Guardian and elsewhere. The concert will mix Chick and Rob’s own largely lyrical compositions, modern but accessible to the ear, with re-workings of jazz standards.
On Saturday 13 November, the flautist Ashley Solomon will make a welcome return to West Linton. Ashley is the leader of Florilegium, arguably the world’s foremost period instrument ensemble, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2011. As part of the anniversary celebrations, Ashley is undertaking a series of major tours with the group and as a soloist. For his visit to the village, he will be accompanied by Terence Charlston on harpsichord, and will play a selection of baroque pieces by Italian masters, including Locatelli and Corelli.
Contact Michael Pryor 660829 for details.
This is a new and exciting addition to the Music Society calendar and one we hope that will become a regular one. We’ve been working with music teachers in the area to arrange this event, which will be a chance for the many young local musicians to showcase their talents. We have as many as 20 young people from the area who will perform for us at what should be an unmisaible event.
The concert is to take place in Carlops Hall at 7pm. This is a free event, but we would be very grateful for any donations to the Music Society.
In November 2009, the Finzi Quartet played for us in the Carlops Church while on their Tunnell Trust tour. They have had an extremely successful year with several prestigious concerts, winning first prize in the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition, an appearance on BBC 3's 'In Tune' and, most excitingly, are now the proud guardians of a set of string instruments made by Vuillaume named 'The Evangelists' all made from the same tree. These wonderful instruments belong to the Swiss Global Artistic Foundation who set up an international competition every two years. The Finzis have won the use of them for the next two year period. They have just agreed to fit us in during their next Scottish tour, so we will be able to see and hear the Finzis again with their amazing instruments!
Sebastian Stanley, the pianist who we heard in St. Mungo's in January was accepted into the International Scottish Piano Competition in September 2010, held in Glasgow. It is one of the biggest piano events in the world and only accepts 24 international pianists from hundreds that apply. We have an enviable record of attracting young artists of this calibre. Don't miss out this year!

All are welcome - please come along to hear some great music on your doorstep.
The Music Society committee are in the process of arranging the concerts for our 2010/11 season. To help us do this, we'd appreciate your views on issues such as:
- where we should hold our concerts
- what night of the week you'd prefer
- what sort of music you'd like to hear.
So, if you'd like more jazz, don't like a particular venue and are too busy on a Saturday to attend, this is your chance to have an influence.
We'll be posting a questionnaire on the website shortly, and would be really grateful if you could complete this and return it to me, Michael Pryor, at mipryor@btopenworld.com or, if you prefer paper, print it off and hand in to Linton Books or the collection box in the Carlops bus shelter. Alternatively, just e-mail me with your thoughts. Thank you.
Our final concert for 2009/10 will take place on Saturday night in Carlops Hall (7.30pm start). This will feature the superb guitarist Simon Thacker, who will be accompanying the hugely talented singer, Daisy Chute. The pair will be performing songs with a jazzy Latin tinge.
The concert will be 'cabaret' style - the room will be set out informally with tables, nibbles and a soft drink bar. If you'd prefer something a little stronger, feel free to bring your own bottle - we'll provide the glasses.
Tickets are £9 on the door, free to members and under 16s.
Our first concert of the new season will take place on Saturday 17 October at 7.30pm in St Mungo's Church, West Linton, and will feature the wonderful Fujita Piano Trio.
The Fujita sisters from Japan have been playing chamber music together since early childhood. They made a highly acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall in March 1999. Concert engagements have taken the Trio to more than 100 venues in the UK. Overseas, they have played in Canada, France, Italy, Ireland, Romania, Egypt, Morocco and Turkey, and they have won numerous awards and prizes, both as a Trio and individually. We are very fortunate to have a group with such a reputation coming to play for us in West Linton.
