West Linton Primary School is a non-denominational school, managed by Scottish Borders Council, catering for pupils from nursery age up to Primary Seven (approximately ages four to eleven).
Children come to the school from the village of West Linton itself and also from other nearby villages and farms in our part of the Scottish Borders.
There are currently 10 classes plus a Nursery, with over 230 pupils in the main school and 40 in the Nursery classes. With West Linton becoming an increasingly popular place to live, the roll is set to rise over the next few years.
The school building was first built in the early 1900's and has been extended and improved over time, with the Nursery being added in the grounds in 1997. Two additional classrooms situated in demountable units were joined to the school in 2002. We have a hard playground which contains many interesting features funded by the PTA and an area of grass. The playing field is a short walk away.
The next few years are set to be exciting ones in terms of the development of our school, as there are plans under development to build a new school in the village to cater for the increasing number of children in the area. At present, it is intended that the new school will be available in 2012.
Once children have completed their time at West Linton, the majority go on to attend Peebles High School, some 15 miles from the village, with a school bus service available to transport children to and from Peebles.
School Ethos
The school aims to encourage an atmosphere where children, staff and parents feel valued for their contribution to school life and at ease in their surroundings in a stimulating environment that presents opportunities for learning, encourages positive thinking and work habits and promotes self esteem and good behaviour. The school aims to provide West Linton and District with a school that will serve the community and its families with the highest possible standard of education.
The school follows Scottish National Curriculum Guidelines for Language, Mathematics, Expressive Arts, Environmental Studies, Health Education, Personal and Social Development and Religious and Moral Education. Staff and parents work together to encourage pupils to reach their potential and a high level of attainment. All are proud of the happy environment in which the children learn.

- The School has an active Parent Council that promotes the involvement of parents and the local community in the running of the school and the education of the children in West Linton and the surrounding area. If you want to contact the Parent Council, its Chair is Michael Pryor, who can be contacted on 01968 660829 or at mipryor@btopenworld.com. The Council meets regularly and details of meetings are posted in this site. The meetings are open to all interested parents and members of the community.
- The Parent Council also incorporates a highly successful and well-supported Parent-Teacher Association. The PTA has raised a great deal of money in its various activities that has been used to provide the school with many resources that it would otherwise not have been able to obtain. The PTA also provides a great way for parents, children and school staff to meet and enjoy activities outside of the normal school day.
- Enrolment - Enrolment - children living in the school catchment area can enrol in the school if their 5th Birthday falls before the end of the February following the start of the school year in August. (e.g. if your child will be 5 between 1st March 2008 and 28th February 2009 he/she can be enrolled to begin Primary 1 in August 2008). Enrolment dates are advertised in the local press in November. Enrolment for children due to start school in August 2008 is scheduled for the week beginning 26th November 2007. Children enrolled in the school are invited to visit in June to get used to their surroundings and parents have the opportunity to meet the school staff before their child enters Primary 1.
- Uniform - all children at the school are expected to wear a school uniform, as this encourages a whole school identity. The uniform consists of white shirts, maroon sweaters or cardigans (optional) and black or grey trousers/skirts/tunic (girls can wear yellow or maroon dresses in the summer). Uniforms are stocked by a number of local shops and various items of clothing with our school logo can be ordered from the school.
- Houses, Prefects and Pupil Council - we have four houses at school into which the children are allocated, each with a house captain. The system is used to encourage positive attitudes and behaviour. Primary 7 Pupils are selected to be prefects and are given certain responsibilities in helping younger children. There is also an active Pupil Council, with representatives elected from each class (P3 and above).
- Additional Needs - children in the local community with additional educational needs attend the school and are given appropriate support to allow them to integrate fully into the life of the school.
- Contact with Parents - the school issues monthly newsletters to inform parents about key issues and events, in addition to other communications on specific items. Other information will be posted on this website. Parents’ evenings are held twice a year, at which parents can discuss their child's progress with teachers.
- Nursery Enrolment - Scottish Borders Council seeks to provide high quality pre-school education for all children whose parents wish it from the term after a child's third birthday.
West Linton Primary School caters for children in their pre-school year, whilst West Linton's Village Nursery provides for children in their ante-pre-school year and younger. There is also a Playgroup in the village providing care to pre-school children. Parents can enrol their child for a place in the Primary School Nursery class if their third birthday falls before the end of February following the start of the school year in August (e.g. if a child will be 4 between March 1st 2008 and 28 Feb 2009, they can enrol to go into nursery in Aug 2008).
Enrolment of children entitled to start nursery in August 2008 is likely to take place during February 2008.
